The Hubpages Challenge – A way to generate residual income?

Well, this has certainly blown up. It seems as if you can actually make some residual income with Hubpages after all. I have seen quite a few posts and articles about this, and at first I wasn’t all that enthused.

I have been following one online writer who has 75 or so hubs up, and it seems as if she really isn’t making all that much money from it. But this 100 hubs in 30 days thing seems to have changed the game.At least it has changed the game for Hubpages. They will be getting a ton of new content.

Basically, the idea is that you throw up 100 hubs and then the money just flows in. I think not. It seems that there will be a lot of people doing one of two things:

  1. Tossing up 100 crappy hubs and them wondering where all the traffic is, and why they are not getting any sweet adsense money.
  2. Tossing up 100 good hubs, and making a little money – but probably not enough to compensate them for their time.

I think a lot of the folks that will be participating in this will be wasting their time, unless they already come from a background where they are used to earning residual income. The reason is that they are for all intents and purposes “wasting” the internet real estate that Hubpages is giving them. The nicest hub ever is nothing if no one can find it. Your adsense acct is nothing if it is nowhere.

There is a better way…

Why not treat the hubs as if they were their own little web sites? By using a hub instead of a stand alone site, you get instant credibility. If you then build it with the same care that you would use on your own site, why you can expect soem actual traffic, and soem money. The great thing about the hub is that it comes with built-in PR and trust via the domain. That seems to me to be value received in turn for the 40% of your adsense that you give them for hosting your page.

So, what does treating your hub as if it was your site mean?

It means taking some care when you put it together. Providing real content. Linking it to your other properties. Promoting it just as you would any of your other sites.

I am in the process of putting up soem hubs for each of my new money sites. Now that I have come ot the above conclusion (thanks Mark & Court!) I am looking at them wiht a different eye. I think that as I build them out, it will be not only to support my niche sites, but also to generate money themselves.

I find it very exciting to think that Hupages could possibly generate enough residual income that it could pay for article outsourcing, hosting, etc.

More on this later…
